Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning!
Dajia Hao!
Asslam-o-Alaikum!
I am pleased to attend the 6th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the last few days, I have participated in various seminars, forums, and events at the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) – 2023. The CIFTIS offers a global platform for cooperation in various areas of the services sector including science and technology, information technology, logistics, and capacity building under South-South cooperation.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizers of the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality for holding this Forum.
In recent years, Pakistan and China have strengthened their bilateral cooperation in various fields, including in the health sector. Traditional Chinese Medicine is an approach that has been used for both curative and preventive treatment of diseases for over 2,500 years. The philosophy of TCM is rooted in the belief that harmony among body, mind, and environment is essential for maintaining good health. This philosophy closely aligns with the traditional medical practices of Unaani Medicine which has been popular and practiced over centuries in Pakistan.
Our two countries established a Pakistan-China Health Corridor during the Prime Minister’s visit in November last year. This corridor offers enormous opportunities for both countries to deepen cooperation in the health sector to leverage advancement in the health sector. Earlier, in 2017, Pakistan and China signed an MoU to promote cooperation in the field of TCM.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Pakistan and China have also established close linkages between academia, research institutions, universities, and hospitals to broaden cooperation in TCM. Recently, we've witnessed the signing of two important MoUs: one between Tang International Education Group and Islamia University, Bahawalpur, and another between the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences at the University of Karachi and Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, aimed at fostering cooperation in TCM.
The leading Chinese Traditional Medicine institute in Changsha has named a major research institute in honour of Professor Atta-ur-Rehman ‘One Belt One Road TCM Research Center’ in recognition of his contributions to establishing close linkages between Pakistan and China.
TCM alongside conventional medical approaches played an instrumental role in the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. It helped TCM manage and alleviate signs and symptoms, boost patients' immune systems, and enhance their overall resilience to combat disease
China has also provided Pakistan with relevant technical assistance in establishing TCM centers and clinics across Pakistan, allowing our people to benefit from the Chinese therapeutic traditions. China has also offered scholarships to Pakistani students to study TCM in Chinese universities, further deepening people-to-people ties between our countries. Moreover, the distribution of TCM products to Pakistan has increased manifold over the years.
At this cortical juncture where tradition and modernity intersect, it is essential to acknowledge that our partnership in TCM is not just about medical techniques; it is also about cultural exchange, people-to-people contacts, and mutual understanding. The principles of TCM - balance, harmony, and interconnectedness - can be applied to enhance cooperation in our broad-spectrum relationships. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, such as global pandemics, climate change, economic disparities, and food insecurity, the wisdom of TCM can inspire us to seek balance and harmony in our international collaborations.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
TCM is a treasure trove of ancient wisdom that has the potential to transform our lives, both physically and psychologically, and enrich our societies. The cooperation between China and the BRI countries in this field reflects our shared commitment to promoting holistic healthcare and the well-being of our people.
Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to the continued success of our partnership in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
