Respected Commissioner Yu Yanhong, Vice President Li Xikui, esteemed leaders, and friends,

The implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative has furnished Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) enterprises with significant opportunities for international expansion, setting new and higher standards. Reflecting on the international endeavors of Tong Ren Tang, I would like to share a few insights.

1. Proactively Integrating and Serving the Belt and Road Initiative: A Promising Outlook for TCM’s Global Expansion
TCM, a magnificent creation of the Chinese nation and a vital component of China’s excellent traditional culture offers a health solution contributed by the Chinese people to humanity. Its concepts of green health, holistic views of harmony between man and nature, diagnostic and therapeutic models of syndrome differentiation and treatment, natural prevention and treatment methods, and full lifecycle health services align with the future trends of medicine and possess robust vitality. The World Health Organization (WHO) officially acknowledged the efficacy and safety of TCM in treating COVID-19 in March 2022, enhancing its global recognition and influence. TCM’s remarkable effectiveness in treating common, frequent, chronic, and difficult diseases, as well as in preventing major infectious diseases, has been widely acknowledged internationally. Leveraging the Belt and Road, TCM is poised for greater development opportunities and broader benefits worldwide.

2. TCM Enterprises Going Global: Seizing Opportunities with Proactive Measures
Since 1993, Tong Ren Tang has embraced the national strategy of ‘going global’ by initiating its internationalization in Hong Kong and establishing its first store and production research base. In 2013, it was awarded as one of the first national TCM service export bases by the Ministry of Commerce. Responding to the Belt and Road Initiative, Tong Ren Tang combines ‘going out,’ ‘bringing in,’ and ‘reaching down’ strategies, operating over 160 comprehensive TCM service stores in 28 countries across five continents, pushing the expansion from ‘where there are Chinese, there is Tong Ren Tang’ to ‘where there is a health need, there is Tong Ren Tang.’

Over thirty years, Tong Ren Tang has utilized culture-led and medicine-driven approaches to promote distinctly Eastern therapies like acupuncture, pulse diagnosis, and tuina massage worldwide, serving about 50 million people abroad and acquainting them with TCM. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it offered tailored treatment plans for 50 countries and regions, including a national TCM prevention and treatment plan for Malaysia, providing Chinese solutions to the global fight against the pandemic and being featured in the 2022 Service Trade Fair as a ‘Global Service Practice Case.’

Actively establishing a quality standard evaluation system that aligns with international standards while retaining the unique characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine, our production lines have passed ISO 22000 certification among other international certifications, with over 1,000 registered product specifications. Tong Ren Tang will steadfastly continue its global expansion, fostering and enhancing the presence of traditional Chinese medicine culture across the world.

3. Deepening Belt and Road Market Penetration: Elevating TCM’s Global Presence and Influence
In Belt and Road countries, where traditional medicine is experiencing a resurgence and cultural identification with TCM is growing, there is tremendous potential for enhancing international health cooperation. Tong Ren Tang is expanding its investment and trade in TCM along the Belt and Road, through establishing TCM hospitals, clinics, wellness institutions, accelerating the rational layout of pharmaceutical industrial bases, enhancing TCM service trade, and exploring overseas medicinal material resources. This approach aims to create multinational corporations and internationally renowned brands with a complete industry chain service.

Promoting TCM globally ‘by letting the results speak’ is the most effective strategy. TCM enterprises should innovate while adhering to their roots, offering superior services and high-quality products. By strictly controlling production quality and increasing product innovation and overseas registration, actively participating in the construction of high-level international cooperation bases and high-quality overseas TCM centers, and engaging in the development of international standards for TCM, they can enrich the contemporary characteristics of TCM. This effort aims to make TCM understandable, trustworthy, and usable globally, competing on a higher level internationally.

The global expansion of TCM also requires enhancing worldwide recognition of TCM culture. TCM enterprises should strengthen cooperation with domestic and international research institutions, higher education institutions, and medical facilities, using modern technology to elucidate the scientific principles and mechanisms of TCM in disease prevention and treatment. By perfecting the ‘TCM health services + product sales’ business model and building product and service experience scenarios, they can effectively communicate the efficacy of TCM and share its stories, increasing understanding, love, and willingness to use TCM globally. Focusing on fostering ‘people-to-people bonds,’ they should actively promote TCM cultural activities along the Belt and Road, expanding the TCM friendship circle.

Colleagues and friends, as a key cultural and health connector in the Belt and Road construction, TCM represents a unique aspect of Chinese culture, embodying Chinese spirit and wisdom. Let us join hands, with medicine as our link and health as our meeting point, to write a new chapter in the high-quality development of the Belt and Road, leveraging the unique advantages of TCM to contribute to building a global community of health for all. Thank you!
