On September 6th, the 6th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development, as a summit forum of the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services, was successfully held at the Beijing National Convention Center. The forum was co-hosted by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, with the theme: 'Deepening Cooperation of Belt and Road Traditional Chinese Medicine Development and Jointly Creating a Global Community of Health for All'. Officials from Chinese and foreign government departments, representatives from international organizations, academicians from the Academy of Engineering, Nobel laureates, and leaders from the political consultative conferences of 10 provinces including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Gansu, Hebei, and Henan, alongside diplomats from 20 embassies stationed in China from countries such as South Africa, Israel, Belarus, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Cape Verde, Liberia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, and Cuba, as well as representatives from over 400 enterprises, participated in the event.

In this season of crisp air and bountiful harvests, it is my great privilege to be among over 400 international guests from more than ten countries worldwide, gathered here for the 6th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations on behalf of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries for the successful convening of this forum and a warm welcome to all attendees.
In September and October of 2013, President Xi Jinping successively proposed the significant initiatives of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. These proposals creatively carried forward and glorified the achievements of the ancient Silk Road as a milestone of human civilization development, endowing it with new significance for our era and embarking on the grand journey of jointly building the Belt and Road. Over the past decade, from laying foundations and erecting pillars to rooting deeply for sustainable development, the Belt and Road Initiative has adhered to the principles of shared consultation, construction, and benefits. It has continually deepened policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds, providing impetus for the development of countries and opening space for international cooperation, thus becoming a widely welcomed international public good and platform for international cooperation.
As a health emissary in the construction of the Belt and Road, traditional Chinese medicine, with its profound cultural heritage, vast philosophical wisdom, unique diagnostic and treatment systems, and intrinsic economic potential, has been increasingly welcomed and recognized by people in more countries along the route. According to related statistics, traditional Chinese medicine has now spread to 196 countries and regions. Acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine have been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Classical texts such as ‘Classics of Traditional Chinese Medicine’, ‘The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine’, ‘Compendium of Materia Medica’, and the ‘Four Medical Tantras’, revered as the encyclopedia of Tibetan medicine, have been successfully included in the ‘Memory of the World Register’. Traditional Chinese medicine is an essential carrier of Chinese excellent traditional culture and a concentrated expression of Chinese civilization. Deepening Belt and Road traditional Chinese medicine cooperation is of significant importance for promoting Chinese excellent traditional culture, enhancing national confidence and cultural confidence, promoting mutual learning among civilizations and people-to-people bonds, and contributing to the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.
Friends, the world today is fraught with turmoil and chaos, with humanity facing significant rises in uncertainty and instability, and the global public health security situation posing a very serious challenge to human health safety. Faced with a common crisis for all humankind, no country can stand aloof and secure itself alone; countries around the world need to cooperate responsibly and work together.
In March this year, President Xi Jinping proposed the ‘Global Civilization Initiative’, issuing a sincere call to the world to deepen civilization exchange and dialogue, to promote the progress of human civilization through mutual learning, contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions for promoting cooperation and mutual learning among diverse civilizations and bringing more opportunities for cooperative benefits among countries worldwide.
