On September 6th, the 6th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development, as a summit forum of the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services, was successfully held at the Beijing National Convention Center. The forum was co-hosted by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, with the theme: 'Deepening Cooperation of Belt and Road Traditional Chinese Medicine Development and Jointly Creating a Global Community of Health for All'. Officials from Chinese and foreign government departments, representatives from international organizations, academicians from the Academy of Engineering, Nobel laureates, and leaders from the political consultative conferences of 10 provinces including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Gansu, Hebei, and Henan, alongside diplomats from 20 embassies stationed in China from countries such as South Africa, Israel, Belarus, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Cape Verde, Liberia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, and Cuba, as well as representatives from over 400 enterprises, participated in the event. I am deeply grateful to the hosts for inviting Fujian Province to this grand event. On behalf of Fujian Province, I extend warm congratulations on the convening of the 6th Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development. At the same time, I express heartfelt thanks to all leaders and guests who have long supported Fujian’s various endeavors.
Situated along the southeast coast, Fujian is a crucial origin and starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. In recent years, under the guidance of President Xi Jinping’s important discourse on traditional Chinese medicine, Fujian has prioritized international cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine, actively promoting its global dissemination and open development. We have successfully hosted the second Belt and Road Forum for Traditional Chinese Medicine Development, continuously enhancing the quality and level of Fujian’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative.
1. Strengthening resource sharing: Under the Belt and Road cooperation framework, Fujian has enhanced resource sharing in traditional Chinese medicine with countries like the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Thailand. For years, we have sent delegations to overseas hospitals for traditional Chinese medicine exchanges, showcasing Fujian’s unique treatments. The ‘China-Philippines Traditional Chinese Medicine Center’ was approved as a special project for international cooperation by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, marking the first Chinese medicine professional registration certificate issued by the Philippine Department of Health to the center.
2. Building exchange platforms: We have widely conducted academic lectures, cooperative education, personnel training, and hosted series of events such as the "Belt and Road" Eastern... Medical Forum. The Southeast Asia Traditional Chinese Medicine Academic Seminar in Quanzhou has been held for 13 sessions, becoming an influential academic exchange platform in Southeast Asia.
3. Deepening trade exchanges: Leveraging the location and cultural advantages of a large overseas diaspora, Fujian established the Antrodia Camphorata Fujian-Taiwan Technology Cooperation Base, promoting ‘Antrodia Camphorata, Anoectochilus roxburghii, Tadehagi pseudotriquetrum’ and other Taiwan-specific varieties as ‘imported medicinal materials’. Products like Fengyoujing, Wuji Balm, Huoxiang Zhengqi Water, and Pian Zai Huang have been sold to Singapore, Thailand, Japan, the USA, Canada, and other countries and regions, effectively promoting renowned products.
4. Integrating deeply into healthcare reform: Continuously enhancing medical insurance policies’ support for traditional Chinese medicine, actively implementing a diversified and complex medical insurance payment reform based on disease types, and encouraging the establishment of payment methods where Chinese and Western medicines are treated equally in terms of disease, efficacy, and price, thereby strengthening the service capacity of traditional Chinese medicine.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional Chinese medicine played a unique and important role in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. On this basis, Fujian actively dispatched experts in traditional Chinese medicine to Italy, the Philippines, and other countries to participate in pandemic prevention and control, guiding overseas Chinese in effectively using traditional Chinese medicine for disease prevention and treatment, which was widely recognized by local governments and people.
Leaders and guests, riding on the Belt and Road Initiative’s developing trend, Fujian’s traditional Chinese medicine will leverage its resource endowment advantages, adhere to creative transformation and innovative development, and strive to provide higher quality and more convenient traditional Chinese medicine health services for people in Belt and Road countries, contributing Fujian’s strength to the spread of traditional Chinese medicine culture and the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry.
